Any leftover files added by mods must be deleted manually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Navigate to where the game was installed which is likely:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>C:\\Program Files x86\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If there is still a&nbsp;<strong>Skyrim Special Edition<\/strong>&nbsp;folder in this location, delete it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"documents-folder\">Documents Folder<a href=\"https:\/\/thephoenixflavour.com\/bg\/additional-modules\/clean-install\/#documents-folder\"><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Skip this step if you never ran Skyrim SE on this PC before (folder would not exist).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, we will take a look at the&nbsp;<strong>Documents<\/strong>&nbsp;folder. Navigate to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>C:\\Users\\&lt;Your User Name&gt;\\Documents\\My Games\\Skyrim Special Edition\\<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This directory may contain multiple files and folders:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The&nbsp;<strong>Skyrim.ini<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>SkyrimPrefs.ini<\/strong>&nbsp;are the game\u2019s primary configuration files.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There may also be a&nbsp;<strong>saves<\/strong>&nbsp;folder which, you guessed it, contains your save games.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lastly, the Documents folder may also include mod-generated files such as logs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Warning:<\/strong>&nbsp;If you have save files that you want to keep, back them up now.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Delete the entire Skyrim Special Edition folder.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The folder and INI files will be regenerated upon launching the game after the reinstallation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that is all. Skyrim SE is now completely removed from your system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"game-language\">Game Language<a href=\"https:\/\/thephoenixflavour.com\/bg\/additional-modules\/clean-install\/#game-language\"><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Skyrim supports a bunch of different languages natively, but mods do not. Since many mods also do not require translations in the first place and some of the ones that do have third-party translations available, it is theoretically possible to play modded in Skyrim in a language other than English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it would complicate your setup immensely. Translations, where available, may be outdated or incomplete. They may not cover voice acting. They may require editing of dozens of texture templates in Photoshop. They may not exist for some of your mods at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Translating any records (and certain textures!) untouched by existing patches plus fixing conflicts between translations and mods will add a hefty amount of work on top of everything else.&nbsp;<strong>I do not recommend it, especially not for a beginner.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>An English-language installation of Skyrim is&nbsp;mandatory&nbsp;for this guide.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Right-click&nbsp;<strong>The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition<\/strong>&nbsp;in your Steam games library.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select&nbsp;<strong>Properties<\/strong>&nbsp;and switch to the&nbsp;<strong>Language<\/strong>&nbsp;tab.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure that the language is set to&nbsp;<strong>English<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"842\" height=\"373\" src=\"https:\/\/upstairsempire.xyz\/dii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/upstairsempire.xyz\/dii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-1.png 842w, https:\/\/upstairsempire.xyz\/dii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-1-300x133.png 300w, https:\/\/upstairsempire.xyz\/dii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-1-768x340.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 842px) 100vw, 842px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"installation-directory\">Installation Directory<a href=\"https:\/\/thephoenixflavour.com\/bg\/additional-modules\/clean-install\/#installation-directory\"><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The location Skyrim is installed to matters.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For one, it is highly recommended to install the game to your fastest drive, ideally an SSD, which will reduce load times. Running Skyrim from an HDD may negatively impact performance, causing stuttering and frame drops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Skyrim must not be located within any UAC-protected folders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"uac-protected-folders\">UAC-Protected Folders<a href=\"https:\/\/thephoenixflavour.com\/bg\/additional-modules\/clean-install\/#uac-protected-folders\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your Steam installation is probably located under&nbsp;<code>C:\\Program Files x86\\Steam\\<\/code>&nbsp;and, by default, all Steam games are installed inside the Steam directory under&nbsp;<code>\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\&lt;Game&gt;\\<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem is that&nbsp;<code>C:\\Program Files\\<\/code>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<code>C:\\Program Files x86\\<\/code>&nbsp;are so-called&nbsp;<strong>UAC-protected folders<\/strong>&nbsp;(UAC = user account control). UAC-protected folders in Windows are special because they require admin privileges for read\/write permissions which can break various modding tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Because of this, Skyrim SE must be installed to a location outside any UAC-protected folders.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"steam-libraries\">Steam Libraries<a href=\"https:\/\/thephoenixflavour.com\/bg\/additional-modules\/clean-install\/#steam-libraries\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When installing a game through Steam, you can select any of your&nbsp;<strong>Steam Libraries<\/strong>&nbsp;as the installation folder. The default Steam Library is within the Steam installation itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you installed Steam in<code>&nbsp;C:\\Program Files x86\\<\/code>&nbsp;you will need to create a new Steam Library in a different location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skip ahead to&nbsp;<strong>Reinstalling Skyrim<\/strong>&nbsp;if you already have a second Steam Library outside UAC-protected folders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By default, you can only have one Steam Library per hard drive. If you want to create a second Steam Library on the same hard drive that you installed Steam on, please use LostDragonist\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/LostDragonist\/steam-library-setup-tool\/wiki\/Usage-Guide\">Steam Library Setup Tool<\/a>&nbsp;and follow the instructions from the link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to create a new Steam Library on another hard drive, follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the&nbsp;<strong>Settings<\/strong>&nbsp;in Steam and go to the&nbsp;<strong>Storage<\/strong>&nbsp;tab.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find the little \u2795 icon near the top to add a new&nbsp;<strong>Steam Library<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the desired hard drive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once set up, the new Steam Library can be selected as the installation directory upon installing a new game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"723\" src=\"https:\/\/upstairsempire.xyz\/dii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/upstairsempire.xyz\/dii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-2.png 850w, https:\/\/upstairsempire.xyz\/dii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-2-300x255.png 300w, https:\/\/upstairsempire.xyz\/dii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-2-768x653.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"reinstalling-skyrim\">Reinstalling Skyrim<a href=\"https:\/\/thephoenixflavour.com\/bg\/additional-modules\/clean-install\/#reinstalling-skyrim\"><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you can reinstall Skyrim. Find the game in the Steam Library tab and click the big blue Install button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>As the installation location choose a Steam Library on your fastest hard drive and outside UAC-protected folders.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proceed when the download is completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"647\" height=\"529\" src=\"https:\/\/upstairsempire.xyz\/dii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/upstairsempire.xyz\/dii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-3.png 647w, https:\/\/upstairsempire.xyz\/dii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-3-300x245.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 647px) 100vw, 647px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"test-run\">Test Run<a href=\"https:\/\/thephoenixflavour.com\/bg\/additional-modules\/clean-install\/#test-run\"><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At this point, we should see if Skyrim launches properly. Running the game once serves multiple purposes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The&nbsp;<code>\\Documents\\My Games\\Skyrim Special Edition\\<\/code>&nbsp;folder including its INI files will be regenerated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The registry keys will be set up which is required for modding tools to recognise your installation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Certain issues with your vanilla game can be detected now (i.e., file corruption during the installation).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Always remember to launch Skyrim once after updating or reinstalling it, or after verifying game files.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Launch the game through Steam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A message box will pop up, informing you that Skyrim SE will now be configured based on your hardware. If Skyrim is unable to detect your hardware, it is likely because you have a newer graphics card which is not recognised; you can ignore the warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click&nbsp;<strong>OK<\/strong>&nbsp;twice to confirm (INI file edits are covered in a different article).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the&nbsp;<strong>PLAY<\/strong>&nbsp;option in the launcher and wait until you are in the Skyrim main menu.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Anniversary Edition:<\/strong>&nbsp;Skyrim will prompt you with a message box, then proceed to download the creations. Wait for it to finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quit the game from the main menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you got this far, everything appears to be running smoothly and you are ready to start modding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"if-you-are-currently-working-through-the-core-module-return-to-step-1bgcore-modulestep1nexus-mods\">If you are currently working through the Core Module, return to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thephoenixflavour.com\/bg\/core-module\/step1\/#nexus-mods\">Step 1<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/thephoenixflavour.com\/bg\/additional-modules\/clean-install\/#if-you-are-currently-working-through-the-core-module-return-to-step-1bgcore-modulestep1nexus-mods\"><\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"recommended-next-step-mo2-setupbgadditional-modulesmo2-setup\">Recommended next step:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thephoenixflavour.com\/bg\/additional-modules\/mo2-setup\/\">MO2 Setup<\/a>.<\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Clean Install | The Phoenix Flavour Uninstalling Skyrim If you currently have Skyrim installed, find the game in your Steam Library.
