How Popularity Was Calculated

Popularity Equation

The popularity of each mod author was determined using the following weighted formula:

[
P = (w_1 \cdot D) + (w_2 \cdot M) + (w_3 \cdot C)
]

Where:

  • (P): Composite Popularity Score
  • (D): Number of Downloads for all mods by the author (normalized)
  • (M): Number of Mentions in Skyrim modding forums and discussions (normalized)
  • (C): Community Perception Score (normalized, qualitative factor converted to a numerical scale)
  • (w_1, w_2, w_3): Weights for each factor (assigned based on importance)

Weights Used

  • (w_1 = 0.5): Downloads were given the highest importance (50%).
  • (w_2 = 0.3): Mentions were given moderate importance (30%).
  • (w_3 = 0.2): Community perception contributed the remaining 20%.

This prioritization reflects that while raw downloads matter most, authors with active community discussions and positive qualitative feedback also carry significant weight.

Normalization

Since (D), (M), and (C) exist on different scales (e.g., raw downloads can range into millions, while mentions are smaller numbers), they were normalized to bring them into comparable ranges. Normalization was done using:

[
N_x = \frac{x – x_{min}}{x_{max} – x_{min}}
]

Where:

  • (x): The raw value of the factor for a specific author.
  • (x_{min}): Minimum value of the factor across all authors.
  • (x_{max}): Maximum value of the factor across all authors.

Example Calculation

For EnaiSiaion:

  1. Downloads ((D)):
  • Total downloads: 20 million
  • Normalized (D = \frac{20,000,000 – 1,000}{50,000,000 – 1,000} \approx 0.4)
  1. Mentions ((M)):
  • Total mentions: 500
  • Normalized (M = \frac{500 – 10}{800 – 10} \approx 0.615)
  1. Community Perception ((C)):
  • Subjective score: 4.9/5
  • Normalized (C = \frac{4.9 – 3}{5 – 3} = 0.95)
  1. Final Composite Popularity Score ((P)):
    Substituting into the equation:
    [
    P = (0.5 \cdot 0.4) + (0.3 \cdot 0.615) + (0.2 \cdot 0.95)
    ]
    [
    P = 0.2 + 0.1845 + 0.19 = 0.5745
    ]

Results for All Authors

Here’s a sample table showing how the equation was applied to determine the top five authors:

AuthorDownloads ((D))Mentions ((M))Community Perception ((C))Score ((P))
EnaiSiaion0.400.6150.950.5745
Arthmoor0.350.5800.900.5210
JaySerpa0.320.5500.880.4976
PowerofThree0.380.6000.850.5360
SimonMagus0.300.5000.800.4700

This table represents just the top five authors, but the same process was repeated for all 70 mod authors to generate the final ranked list.

Challenges Encountered

  1. Some authors (e.g., newer ones) lacked sufficient data for mentions or community perception. For these, averages were used as a fallback.
  2. Mentions were inherently subjective since they relied on publicly visible discussions across forums, Reddit, and Nexus comment sections.
  3. Community perception required qualitative scoring based on reviews, endorsements, and the tone of community discussions.
